Lately when I try to defragment my drives, it doesn't work.
I go to My Computer, right click the C: drive and Properties, then Tools, It analyzes the drive or drives, says "Your file system performance can be improved" and recommends that I defragment now , but then when I hit the "Defragment now..." button, it just recycles the analysis and says I need to defragment again, and has reactivated the "Defragment now..." button. Clicking it again simply recycles the procedure without ever taking me to a screen showing the defragmentation process, like it used to do. It's like a perpetual analysis with no actual defragmenting. Above in dimmed lettering it notes that the defragmenter was last run, perhaps minutes before, but it also still recommends I defragment. It's a crazy loop.
I note that somewhere along the line the window for Disk Defragmenter changed its appearance; I just assumed it was during a Windows Update of some sort.
2008 Dell XPS 1530, Vista sp2.
As a subnote, my security program has removed 3 trojans in the last 3 weeks that snuck by its active spotter, but were found in subsequent system scans I've run. It probably has nothing to do with the defragmentation issue.
What's up?
